UNION Fanfare

When I first joined Professor Charles Villarrubia's studio, I was amazed by the way he could listen to just a ten minute audition and somehow see the potential, passion, and personality of each player. From that short moment, he builds a studio of individuals who, while incredibly different in their backgrounds and musical voices, come together to form something far greater than the sum of their parts. These people, once strangers,have now become some of my closest friends, collaborators, and inspirations.

UNION Fanfare i s my musical tribute to that experience. The piece opens with a majestic introduction led b y the euphoniums, symbolizing the strength and unity of our shared artistry. The tubas join in, reinforcing and grounding the ensemble a s we come together on a powerful F major chord, a declaration of our collective sound.

The central section reflects one of the most profound lessons Professor Villarrubia teaches us: that every musician has a unique voice. Through the demanding etudes he assigns, we are challenged to discover and refine that voice, shaping phrases with individuality and intent. This is embodied in a majestic, etude-inspired melody that showcases both technical mastery and expressive depth.

Finally, the piece circles back, revisiting the opening material as if rewinding the

journey, and drives toward a triumphant conclusion. In the end, UNION Fanfare

celebrates not just the power of music, but the power o f people coming together: one studio, one sound, one UNION.
